U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers Seize More Than $112,000 in Marijuana in Brownsville Brownsville, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge discovered over $112,000 in marijuana concealed behind the back seat of a Ford Contour; one Mexican citizen was arrested. On Wednesday, May 27, at the Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge, CBP officers encountered a green 1999 Ford Contour driven by Eduardo Luis Figueroa Hidrogo, a 20-year-old Mexican citizen and resident of Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico. After a primary inspection revealed discrepancies to the back seat area of the Ford, Figueroa Hidrogo was referred for an intensive secondary examination. In secondary CBP officers’ inspection of the Contour resulted with the discovery of a man-made compartment hidden behind the Ford’s back seat. CBP officers removed 17 marijuana packages with a combined total weight of over 112 pounds of marijuana. The marijuana from this seizure has an estimated street value of close to $112,000. CBP officers arrested the driver and turned him over to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents who investigated the seizure and will process the driver on federal drug charges. “CBP officers on a daily basis encounter people trying to smuggle contraband into the country. This seizure is an example of the hard work Brownsville’s CBP officers undertake every day to secure the homeland," said Michael Freeman, CBP Port Director, Brownsville. U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws. |

I LOVE seeing these stories because they drive home the point that all over the country thousands and thousands of tons of pot are being grown and transported and there is little that law enforcement can do about it, they don't even catch 5%. Pot should be legal. Mexico just legalized possession of small amounts of all drugs. Switzerland just legalized heroin. Portugal decriminalized all drugs in 2001 and their experience has been positive. Now if you are caught with a 10 day supply of your drug or less you face an administrative court, not a criminal court, but in practice they are just not arresting people. A group of 10,000 very serious policemen, prosecutors, attorneys and citizens have formed a group to legalize ALL drugs, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (http://leap.cc ) They see what happened when we legalized alcohol in 1932 as a good example of how drug legalization would work. This foolish war on drugs has lasted 37 years and cost us over a TRILLION dollars and we are not an inch closer to stopping drugs.
