New York CBP Officers Intercept Marijuana Smuggling Attempt

Buffalo, N.Y. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection today announced the seizure of approximately 8.5 pounds of marijuana from a local Canadian couple. The seizure resulted in the arrest of the two individuals.

On June 28, CBP officers encountered a 28-year-old Male and 29-year-old female couple, both Canadian citizens from Niagara Falls, Ontario, as they applied for admission into the United States at the Rainbow Bridge border crossing in Niagara Falls, N.Y. The subjects advised CBP officers that they were en-route to visit a relative in Grand Island, N.Y. Additional questioning of the couple aroused the suspicion of CBP officers and the vehicle was referred for a secondary enforcement exam.

During the inspection of the vehicle, CBP officers noticed discrepancies with the spare tire for the pick- up truck. A CBP narcotics detector dog also alerted to the undercarriage area of the pick-up bed. CBP officers utilized a portable contraband detector device known as a “Buster” that locates density anomalies concealed behind opaque surfaces, such as door panels and fuel tanks. A higher than normal reading was detected on the vehicle’s spare tire. The spare tire was cut open, revealing five vacuum-sealed bags of marijuana.

“The discovery of the marijuana is the direct result of alert CBP officers utilizing K9 and non-intrusive technology to interdict narcotics destined for the streets of our local communities,” said Joseph J. Wilson, port director for the Port of Buffalo.

Both individuals were arrested and turned over to Niagara Falls Police Department pending prosecution by the Niagara County District Attorney’s Office.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
