| DOC Worker Stays Out Of Jail Despite DUI |

A former La Junta chief of police and current Colorado Department of Corrections investigator was arrested for drunken driving Labor Day, and his subsequent treatment exposed policy confusion at the police department. Charles Widup, 61, of Pueblo, was charged with driving under the influence and careless driving after his Toyota Tundra pickup reportedly hit a Saturn Ion carrying six people, at the 3400 block of Elizabeth Street at about 4:30 p.m. Monday. Widup was cited but not booked into jail, and was transported home a few hours after the incident. According to a report by police officer Brandi Halverson, Widup's truck landed on its driver's side and the car he hit, driven by Russell Martinez, 32, of Pueblo, drove into oncoming, northbound traffic until it came to a stop 50 feet south of the collision point.
