Gloucester County officials reflect on jail closure one year later |

County and local law enforcement officials gathered outside the former Gloucester County jail on Tuesday to mark the one-year anniversary of when they emptied its cells, locked its doors and moved inmates to jails in surrounding counties as part of its regionalization of corrections services. It's a move that officials said has saved the county about $10 million in the past year alone, with savings set to compound over the next 25 years, and increased police presence in local municipalities. But they didn't ignore the harsh criticism, lawsuits and heated board meetings they faced when they introducing the jail closure plan, which sends the county's male inmates to jails in Burlington, Salem, Cumberland and Essex counties and makes Gloucester County the first in the state to regionalize its entire corrections department.
