Inmate Death under Investigation |

The Connecticut Department of Correction is investigating the untimely death of an inmate at the Northern Correctional Institution in Somers. At approximately 7:41 a.m. on Friday, October 17, 2014, correctional staff discovered an unresponsive inmate in his cell. Correctional and medical staff immediately initiated emergency and life saving measures. The inmate, who was alone in his cell at the time of the incident, was transported to Johnson Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:40 a.m. The inmate is identified as 27-year-old Sonny Rivera of East Hartford, CT. Rivera was serving a four-and-a- half-year-sentence for Assault, second degree; he had been incarcerated since February 21, 2012. The exact manner and cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner’s Office. The Department of Correction and the Connecticut State Police are investigating the death. |
