ADOC deputy commissioner says changes coming to Tutwiler Prison |

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Alabama Department of Corrections is opening up about its actions to fix problems at Tutwiler Women's Prison. A federal investigation recently revealed widespread sexual harassment of inmates, along with other problems. “It's still an ongoing investigation, so it wouldn't be appropriate for us to comment much about it,” Alabama Department of Corrections Deputy Commissioner Dr. Wendy Williams said. She will says that major improvements are taking shape. “We are well on our way to a healthy and safe environment.” In January, the U.S. Department of Justice sent a 36-page letter to Alabama outlining findings of sexual abuse that is grossly under-reported, insufficient staffing and supervision, inadequate policies and procedures, a heightened fear of retaliation, and an inadequate investigative process.
