Prisons expansion could cost hundreds of millions |

LINCOLN — An updated master plan that calls for a first phase of expansion of more than 1,100 beds in Lincoln and Omaha prisons could cost the state more than $261 million, consultants say. The plan, released Tuesday afternoon by the Department of Correctional Services, would address overcrowding in three phases over 10 years, so implementation could be tailored to the department's needs, Corrections Director Mike Kenney said. If all three phases were completed, the cost could reach $685 million. The plan was drafted by Dewberry Architects and Carlson West Povondra Architects in collaboration with the department.
