Mentally ill inmates need more help

LINCOLN — Jails and prisons have become the largest mental health treatment centers in the nation as treatment centers have been closed and services have degraded, a panel of state legislators was told Tuesday.

In Nebraska, the Douglas County Jail holds the most mentally ill people, and the nation’s three largest facilities for holding the mentally ill are county jails in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York City.

Since upward of 95 percent of inmates return to society, it’s incumbent on corrections officials to beef up mental health treatment so that public safety isn’t threatened and inmates are successful after prison, the legislators were told.
