Jackson prison staff awarded $340K in whistle-blower suit

The former warden and assistant warden of the Jackson Correctional Institution have been awarded more than $340,000 in a whistle-blower action they brought alleging gross misconduct by investigators with the Florida Department of Corrections' Office of Inspector General.

Leon County jurors last week awarded damages from lost wages and benefits to Ted Jeter, the prison's former warden, and Carolann Bracewell, the former assistant warden. Jeter was awarded $205,000, and Bracewell was awarded nearly $136,000, according to court documents.

Jeter and Bracewell sued in 2013, saying DOC retaliated against them after they came forward with allegations that the department's Inspector General coerced prison staff members to change their testimony in an investigation involving the prison's response to medical emergencies of two inmates.
