Authorities are searching for an inmate who didn’t return to the Council Bluffs Work Release Facility. Officials placed Joseph C. Smith Jr., 21, on escape status when he failed to return to the facility after getting off work Sunday, according to the Iowa Department of Corrections. Smith is currently serving a seven-year sentence for willful injury causing bodily injury, assault with a weapon and assault causing serious injury connected to a 2012 arrest in Council Bluffs. On May 2 of that year, Smith pushed his way into a home while looking to settle a $50 debt, and an altercation ensued. He pleaded guilty to the listed charges as part of an agreement with prosecutors. Read More. |
