Changes in store on Rikers Island |

Soon after Mayor de Blasio and city Department of Correction Commissioner Joe Ponte set forth a 14-point plan in March to improve Rikers Island, there have been newly introduced programs over recent weeks that look to improve the quality of life at the jail. One aims to expedite the criminal justice process in the city. Called “Justice Reboot,” it was created with Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman and urges immediate steps to speed up what is now criticized as a jammed court process that has led to overcrowding and longer periods of detainment in city jail facilities. “Justice Reboot will reduce unnecessary incarceration even further while promoting fairness by streamlining coordination among criminal justice actors, and using technology to identify, track, and solve problems in the city’s criminal justice system,” reads a release from de Blasio’s office describing the plan. As part of the initiative, if an inmate has been held at Rikers for more than a year, the case should be calendared for trial within 45 days, and 50 percent of cases should be resolved within six months.
