Course Takes Howard Students Inside Prison |

You might think you’ve taken a criminal justice class – you haven’t. Not until you’ve taken one in prison with incarcerated persons. Through the Dr. Muhammad Experience, that’s what I have been able to do this semester. And it is an experience like no other. The Dr. Muhammad Experience, dubbed so by students in the class, is an educational model developed by Dr. Bahiyyah Muhammad, Professor of Criminology here at Howard. Using technology and regular visits to a participant prison, the model brings together “outside” Howard students and “inside” incarcerated individuals to study criminal justice in an academic setting. The highlight of the model is a spring break component through which students sleep on the prison grounds for a full week. Dr. Muhammad’s model is the only one of its kind, and this semester is the first time that such a model has been implemented on any campus of higher education. It marks the first time anywhere in the world that students spent the night at a prison as a requirement of their course curriculum. Read More. |
