NCCHC Launches Specialty Certification for Correctional Physicians
By National Commission on Correctional Healthcare
Published: 07/25/2015

Chicago – Physicians who specialize in work with incarcerated populations now have a certification to call their own: CCHP–Physician. The latest offering from NCCHC’s Certified Correctional Health Professional program, the CCHP-P credential recognizes expertise among physicians practicing in the field of correctional health care.

“Correctional physicians are proud of their work in this specialized field,” says Patricia Reams, MD, CCHP, who chairs the task force that developed the specialty program. “CCHP-P certification gives them the opportunity to be recognized for their professional knowledge and skills.” Dr. Reams also is the chair of NCCHC’s board of directors, serving as the liaison of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a supporting organization of NCCHC.

Years in the making, the program was spearheaded by a task force of 11 leading experts in correctional medicine. This team worked diligently to define the domain of knowledge unique to practicing in a correctional environment, and to develop an examination that would measure a candidate’s mastery of that knowledge. After nearly a year of pilot testing, the first exam will be offered in October at NCCHC’s National Conference on Correctional Health Care.

CCHP-P certification demonstrates a commitment to maintain the knowledge necessary to augment competent and appropriate clinical care to incarcerated patients. Through exam preparation and annual recertification, the program also encourages ongoing professional development.

Endorsed by the Society of Correctional Physicians

The Society of Correctional Physicians (soon to become the American College of Correctional Physicians) has officially endorsed the CCHP-P exam. “This is an exciting time in our profession where opportunities for advancement are becoming available,” says Rebecca Lubelczyk, MD, CCHP, president of SCP and a CCHP-P task force member. “SCP supports certification that recognizes and rewards for breadth and depth of correctional health knowledge.”

The first exam will be offered Oct. 19 in Dallas. The application deadline is Sept. 10. For information about eligibility criteria and how to apply, please visit www.ncchc.org/cchp-p.
