Teens graduate from correctional facility |

Patrick Jefferson assured teens at the Ventura Youth Correctional Facility that it was okay to smile during a milestone some may have thought they would never experience: their high school graduation. The speaker said men, especially those of color, too often hide their emotions in an attempt to look tough in front of their peers. “This is a big deal,” said Jefferson, the executive vice president of student learning at Ventura College, to the young men in their caps and gowns. “It’s okay to be happy about it. It’s okay to be excited about it. It’s okay to enjoy that feeling.” Jefferson, who alluded to challenges during his own childhood, was the keynote speaker during the commencement ceremony for Mary B. Perry High School last week. The school, which provides those in the juvenile justice system with an avenue to earn their high school diplomas, held its commencement ceremony on June 26 before an enthusiastic crowd of supporters.
