Corrections officials to hold re-entry resource fair tomorrow |

One of the biggest challenges facing Florida Keys probation officials trying to help recently released prison inmates acclimate to life without bars should sound familiar to many working-class residents — affordable housing. The Florida Department of Corrections supervised release and probation officials in the Keys are holding a special re-entry resource fair Thursday morning along with Monroe County transportation, health, school, shelter and counseling leaders in a larger effort to keep convicts out of custody. In Key West, that goal often comes down to finding men and women on probation employment and a place to live — the latter being one of the most challenging goals for many of those on probation, said Bob Audette, senior supervisor with the DOC Community Corrections, which oversees supervised release and probation. “Affordable housing is our No. 1 challenge,” Audette said. “Many can find jobs, but for many it’s part-time jobs. Many are getting paid minimum wage facing rents that can be well over $1,000 a month. People coming out of prison are often forced to do a lot of couch-surfing and that makes it difficult when you’re on supervision.” Read More. |
