Prisons proposed as training ground for student mental health workers |

Nebraska prisons could be a key tool in building Nebraska’s future mental health workforce, specifically people who could work with inmates, a University of Nebraska Medical Center doctor said Tuesday at a hearing of a legislative special investigative committee. Reports have pointed to the high rate of mental illness and substance abuse among inmates, which may be present before they enter prison, develop while they are there or be made worse by the stresses of prison. Allowing more students to train in the prisons can help meet Nebraska’s need for psychiatrists and mental health workers in the state, said Dr. Howard Liu, director of the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska. But some senators questioned the idea of having students in the prisons and how that would help meet the Department of Correctional Services' needs for better mental health services. Read More. |
