Prison guard shortage forces new overtime policy

Madison— As the Department of Corrections wrestles with a shortage of officers, it is implementing a new policy that will force more employees to work overtime.

For years, the newest officers have been made to work overtime shifts when no one volunteered for them. Under the new policy, overtime is assigned on a rotation system, meaning that veteran officers and sergeants will more often be forced to work overtime shifts.

Critics say the change will cost taxpayers more money because the veteran employees make more than the newer employees. Department spokeswoman Joy Staab said agency officials believed the proposal would not increase costs, but did not explain why they thought that.

To solve the worker shortage, Corrections Secretary Ed Wall is seeking more pay for prison workers, he wrote in a Nov. 4 memo to staff. Staab did not say when that would be implemented or how the department would pay for it.
