Shawnee County’s juvenile detention facility is nationally accredited for the first time. Brian Cole, director of the department of corrections, briefed the county commission Thursday on the accreditation his department received in late January. The department has been working to receive accreditations for its adult, juvenile and work annex facility from the American Corrections Association since 2000, Cole said, and has been concentrating on the getting juvenile center accredited since 2013. The national organization sets guidelines and expectations for correctional facilities. An ACA accreditation means the juvenile detention program meets a high set of standards and follows industry best practices. “The police department and sheriff’s department are accredited, so I thought the people deserved an accredited corrections program,” Cole said Thursday.
