Community corrections' success helps make our community safer |

Reno County Community Corrections can celebrate a rising success rate, and that is good news for our community. Community Corrections is an intensive probation program designed to rehabilitate people without sending them to prison. While we want to protect our cities from violent and dangerous offenders, too often jails and prisons end up housing drug abusers and people who are struggling with mental illness. These are diseases and disorders. Prisons weren’t meant to be hospitals or care facilities. That’s what the Community Corrections program has sought to do, and it seems to be working. The Reno County agency’s success rate of those completing probation without being revoked to serve prison terms grew from 67 percent in 2014 to 72 percent in fiscal 2015. With a month and a half remaining in fiscal 2016, that number has jumped to 84 percent. In terms of case numbers, that represents a drop from 79 cases being revoked in 2015 to 62 in 2015 and only 26 so far this fiscal year. Read More. |
