Sheriff Tompkins continues notable run with Correction Officers Local 419 Endorsement
By Sheriff Tompkins

For the second time in as many years, Sheriff Steve Tompkins has earned the endorsement of AFSCME Local 419, the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department's largest correction officers' union.

Building upon the history that he achieved during his first campaign for the office in 2014 when he became the county's only sitting sheriff to have ever been endorsed by the union, Sheriff Tompkins was once again humbled by the honor.

"I truly am grateful for this tremendous vote of confidence," said Sheriff Tompkins. "To have the support of the women and men of Local 419 means a great deal to me, and it also reinforces my belief that we are continuing to make strides together as we work to make our exceptional organization even better."

Citing Sheriff Tompkins' support of the Department's officers and organized labor as a whole, along with an increased emphasis on providing more support services for employees, members of Local 419's leadership spoke about their endorsement.

"It is with great pleasure that we offer you our endorsement in the upcoming election for Sheriff of Suffolk County," said Local 419 President Robert DeBole. "Your interest in improving the resources that our members need in dealing with such a high stress profession and your support of the entire labor movement are just two of the things that led to our decision."

"The working relationship has greatly improved between the Local and your office since your appointment [in 2013]," added Local 419 Political Director Michael Simpson. "We look forward to continuing this working relationship after your election to a full term. With your help, we can make the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department the model for sheriff's departments and correctional facilities across this great nation."

Appointed to the position in 2013, Sheriff Tompkins won election in 2014 as a first-time candidate with over 83% of the vote. As the Sheriff of Suffolk County, Tompkins manages all operations at the Suffolk County House of Correction, the Nashua Street Jail and the Civil Process Division. In addition to providing care, custody and rehabilitative support for inmates and pre–trial detainees, Tompkins also oversees a management, security and administrative staff of over 1,000. Sheriff Tompkins holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Boston College and a Master’s Degree in Public Affairs from the University of Massachusetts.
