Dept. of Corrections continues to build good environment for inmates with mental illness |

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)- The Shawnee County Department of Corrections is heading south to learn more about caring for inmates with mental health problems. “The reason I want to go down there is to stay up with the current trends in how to manage a very difficult population of those who suffer with mental illness,” said Brian Cole, director, Shawnee County Department of Corrections. On Thursday, the Shawnee County Commission approved sending two Department of Corrections staff members to the Dona Ana County Detention Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico. They will tour the mental health unit within the facility and bring ideas back to Shawnee County on how they improve in that area. The cost of the trip will not exceed $2,000. Read More. |
