Wiley College set to offer inmate degrees

MARSHALL — Wiley College is among 68 colleges and universities in the nation to offer inmates a chance to earn a degree or certification as part of a new federal program.

Inmates will be able to buy books and pay tuition through a federal Second Chance Pell Grant.

"Education is a powerful tool," said college President Haywood Strickland. "It can alter the course of a life from one filled with negativity, crime and repeated mistakes to one filled with hope and fulfilled promises of positive change."

Wiley College plans to partner with three Louisiana prison facilities: Madison Parish Detention Center, St. Gabriel Unit of the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women and Winnfield Correctional Center.
