Fair booth promotes job opportunities at Portage prison

Chip clip? Soda can insulator? Pen? Career at a maximum-security prison?

A first-time commercial exhibit at the Columbia County Fair is offering, in addition to the usual fair swag, something unusual.

Starting Wednesday afternoon, and for the run of the fair through Sunday, employees of the Columbia Correctional Institution at Portage will be on hand to tell fairgoers about a variety of jobs that need to be filled.

“We’re hiring all kinds of people, not just correctional officers,” said Sasha Ripley, a teacher at CCI. “We’re looking for people in the kitchen, the business office, the warehouse …”
