Cold Springs Center reopened by Department of Corrections |

The Cold Springs Detention Center in Greenville has been reopened by the Virginia Department of Corrections because of structural issues with the Southampton Men's Detention Center in Southampton, according to the Department of Corrections. The department moved 78 offenders, all non-violent detainees, to Cold Springs on Friday after an engineer found the Southhampton facility had structural problems that made it unsafe in high winds. Cold Springs closed in November 2014 as part of a mandated state budget cut by Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe. At the time, the closing of the Augusta County prison affected 56 employees. It's not clear if any of those jobs will return, as much of the staff that had been working at Southhampton has been transferred to Cold Springs. Read More. |
