Guards injured in 2 assaults by inmates at California prison |

The California Department of Corrections says guards have been injured by prisoners in two assaults at Kern Valley State Prison. The first assault occurred about 6:40 a.m. Monday when an inmate refused to go into a cell and punched one of two escorting officers, knocking one down stairs. The department says another inmate ran out of the cell and joined the attack, which was quelled by less-lethal rounds, pepper spray, physical force and a baton.
