Inmate charged with setting cell on fire

An inmate at the Joplin City Jail has been charged with setting a padded cell on fire with a cigarette lighter that inmates are not allowed to have.

The Jasper County prosecutor's office charged Ricky D. Pitts, 47, with first-degree arson in connection with a fire early Tuesday morning at the Joplin City Jail, 303 E. Third St.

The Joplin Fire Department was called to the jail at 12:22 a.m. regarding a fire in G Cell, a padded cell for disruptive inmates. Jail staff were able to extinguish the fire before firefighters arrived, and no injuries to inmates or jail employees were reported, according to Joplin police.
