Article: Union protests prison teacher layoffs

I understand your concerns for the inmates but really how many convicted felons actually get out and get a job? There are lay offs with teachers that are teaching our kids who have not yet committed crimes and need this opportunity that these criminal already had, don't you think they need their education more than these, robbers, drug sellers and users, rapers, killers, theives, gun carrying, car jackers, etc. So tell me who job you should be fighting for??????????

Article: Information vessels as contraband

I never thought about the cell phone sending pictures and being a way to find out how to make weapons but all of this information is on those smart phones because they do have internet access and the majority of them do take pictures. Taking pictures would be a law suit waiting to happen. I understand better why we are not allowed to bring cell phones inside the jail because there would be some soft employee that would let them use their phone or some careless person losing theirs........Thanks for the post.

Article: Taming an Atypical Formulary Beast

Excellent article on the value of formularies in correctional healthcare. Atypical antipsychotics is a good example. Most community medical services work through a formulary - as should corrections. It increases costs while maintaing effectiveness of care. LorrySchoenly, PhD, RN, CCHP

Article: Inmates' lawyers for Schwarzenegger to be held in contempt for prison plan

Education is far more important than "public safety." We must find a way to EDUCATE our young people in California, so that we don't find ourselves devastated with these terrible costs to keep our prisons running. There is terrible crowding and we all admit that. There is a huge weight on our medical staffs and they're struggling the best they can. There is terrible tension in dorms and cells. The CDCR stands for Corrections and Rehabilitation, but now the budget cut backs take away even the chances for thousands of inmates to gain any training to handle life out the outside. The rest of the world is looking at California like we're a "backwater"... a strange cesspool of barbarians taking advantage of the incarcerated.

Article: The Crate Escape: 10 more years for inmate

Well in my opinion,This woman should be prosecuted to the highest extent of the law.Not only did she use her position to get inside the prison, she got involved with an offender, she broke the cardinal rules of,dont touch, and leave them inside the walls where you found them.In Mo. where I am a CO. the involvement as it was called would get her a class D felony,Im not sure what they would do about the escape attempt.Great job done by the ones who caught this before it got completed.

Article: Walking With the Predators

Tracy Barnhart wrote an excellent article on Correctional Officers and the positions that we hold. The public can only imagine what our jobs as Correctional Officers are. They only know what they see on TV and in the movies. Unless you are a Correctional Officer, you don't understand the mental and physical stress that is invovled with the positions that we hold. Our family members suffer from our over protective ways due to what we see on a daily basis. We also hold our children to a higher standard so that they don't wind up on the wrong side of the bars due to what we see everyday. We are counselors, care-givers and nurses all wrapped into one. We are Correctional Officers, and we are where the real law enforcement begins.

Article: Inmate Behavior Management: The Key to a Safe and Secure Jail

This was a great article. I have been working corrections for over 16 yrs and direct supervision is a great idea. The response by inmates is so much more managable. If you don't practice this you should it will save your jail, alot of money in the long run.

Article: Organizational Change

Director Humphrey's article is thought provoking and does challenge behavioral thinking. This should be a challenge, then, for all managers who attempt to effect change. Consequently what does it take for managers to be transformational? This is where change takes place rather than just being thought about. The sources that Humphrey cites are all major contributors to Organizational Behavior literature and have many theories about what it takes to put new "behaviors" in place. The key ingredient to implementing changing ideas is motivation. There are many motivators that managers and supervisors use to get organizational forces directed properly, but the right set of motivators must be chosen to achieve success. I have seen many natural leaders from a broad spectrum of experiences work wonders in the Corrections setting during the last 25 years. I have also seen a few others who failed miserably because the game plan was not sound and then became coercive. Hopefully our agencies will not become victims of Bennis' quotation: "Failing organizations are usually over-managed and under-led." This is indeed a big challenge, but an import one with a purpose, particularly in our field. John J. Murphy Captain NYC Dept of Correction

Article: Bruce McCain - Multnomah Co. Sheriff

McCain has come from the jail whereas Staton is well versed in the LE side. I think McCain would be far less likely to sell out the "jailguards" side of the Office than Staton would. I also believe that McCain would be balanced in the overall scheme of the Sheriff's position. I don't believe Staton would have ever dreamed of being Sheriff if it were not for Skipper's endorsement.

Article: Karadzic's Hague trial could begin Oct 19

Irrefutable Proof ICTY Is Corrupt Court/Irrefutable Proof the Hague Court Cannot Legitimately Prosecute Karadzic Case http://lpcyu.instablogs.com/entry/nato-says-the-hague-tribunal-or-icty-belongs-to-nato-truth-bites-for-te-hague-lately/ This legal technicality indicates the Hague must dismiss charges against Dr karadzic and others awaiting trials in the Hague jail; like it or not. Unfortunately for the Signatures Of the Rome Statute United Nations member states instituting the ICC & ICTY housed at the Hague, insofar as the, Radovan Karadzic, as with the other Hague cases awaiting trial there, I personally witnessed these United Nations member states openly speaking about trading judicial appointments and verdicts for financial funding when I attended the 2001 ICC Preparatory Meetings at the UN in Manhattan making the iCTY and ICC morally incapable trying Radovan Karazdic and others. I witnessed with my own eyes and ears when attending the 2001 Preparatory Meetings to establish an newly emergent International Criminal Court, the exact caliber of criminal corruption running so very deeply at the Hague, that it was a perfectly viable topic of legitimate conversation in those meetings I attended to debate trading verdicts AND judicial appointments, for monetary funding. Jilly wrote:*The rep from Spain became distraught and when her country’s proposal was not taken to well by the chair of the meeting , then Spain argued in a particularly loud and noticably strongly vocal manner, “Spain (my country) strongly believes if we contribute most financial support to the Hague’s highest court, that ought to give us and other countries feeding it financially MORE direct power over its decisions.” ((((((((((((((((((((((((( ((((((((((((((((((((((((( Instead of censoring the country representative from Spain for even bringing up this unjust, illegal and unfair judicial idea of bribery for international judicial verdicts and judicial appointments, all country representatives present in the meeting that day all treated the Spain proposition as a ”totally legitimate topic” discussed and debated it between each other for some time. I was quite shocked! The idea was "let's discuss it." "It's a great topic to discuss." Some countries agreed with Spain’s propositions while others did not. The point here is, bribery for judicial verdicts and judicial appointments was treated as a totally legitimate topic instead of an illegitimate toic which it is in the meeting that I attended in 2001 that day to establish the ground work for a newly emergent international criminal court.)))))))))))))))))))))))))))) In particular., since "Spain" was so overtly unafraid in bringing up this topic of trading financial funding the ICC for influence over its future judicial appointments and verdicts in front of every other UN member state present that day at the UN, "Spain" must have already known by previous experience the topic of bribery was "socially acceptable" for conversation that day. They must have previously spoke about bribing the ICTY and ICC before in meetings; this is my take an international sociological honor student. SPAIN's diplomatic gesture of international justice insofar as, Serbia, in all of this is, disgusting morally! SPAIN HAS TAUGHT THE WORLD THE TRUE DEFINITION OF AN "INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT." I remind everyone, when I attended those ICC Preparatory Meetings in 2001, witnessing first hand the country plenipotentiary representatives present with me discussing so openly, trading judicial funding of a new international criminal court, for its direct judicial appointments and judicial verdicts, those same state powers were concurrently, those same countries and people were already simultaneously, funding the already established ICTY which was issuing at that time, arrest warrants for Bosnian Serbs (primarily) under false diplomatic pretenses. The ICTY and ICC is just where it should be for once. Cornered and backed into and an international wall, scared like a corned animal (and I bet it reacts in the same way a rabid cornered animal does too in such circumstances). (ICTY associates) murdered former Serb President, Slobodan Milosevic, tried to murder me, as well and other Serbs prisoners and presently places , Doctor Radovan Karadzic’s life in direct danger as well as Ratko Mladic’s life in danger should he be brought there. The ICTY has no other choice than to halt all further court proceedings against, Doctor Radovan Karadzic, and others there both serving sentences and awaiting trials. Miss JIll Louise Starr (The UN Security Council has no choice but to act on this now). I represented the state interests' of the Former Yugoslavia, in Darko Trifunovic’s absence in those meetings and I am proud to undertake this effort on Serbia’s behalf.

Article: Burress sentenced to two years in prison

People having guns that are not properly trained about gun safety a lot of times shoot innocent bystanders and in his case themselves. It happens all the time because its so easy to obtain a gun illegal. Theres no one solution to this problem. Some say make all gun posession illegal but the problem most of the times are with the guns bought illegal. A 15 or 16 year old are a convicted felon can't go in a store and buy a gun but they still have them, so if you stop the law abiding citizen from baring arms then the only one with them will be the criminals. Its just a no win situation in my opinion.....

Article: Walking With the Predators

That was the best article that I have read concerning our job. You said it all in one neat little bundle. This really needs to be published so others not in corrections can read it and see what we really do. I have been asked so many times what is it that you do or how can you be in there with them all day or do you have a gun in there with them etc. The public has no idea what we do and management has forgotten what we do. They are now trying to please those above them and those below them well they are kind of on their own. The officer pleases the corporal, the corporal pleases the Sgt. the Sgt. pleases the Lt. the Lt. pleases the Captain and the Captain pleases the Major and the Major pleases the Deputy Chief and Deputy Chief pleases the Chief, etc.........So you see, us at the bottom got a long ways to go to get our justice because there is no one thats trying to please us..........but we are the ones that are really holding the whole system together, without us none of them could do their jobs. The whole stucture would come tumbling down because we are the foundation. There is nothing that will stand without a good foundation..........

Commissioner Horn was the smartest, the most sociable, the most approachable commissioner I have had the pleasure to work under in my 21 year career with the NYDOC. No matter what rank you were he made you feel like part of the team. I believe that his replacement will continue his mission statement and some. I wish the Commish the best of luck and health.

Article: Workplace Entanglements

I think this is a good article and it has a lot of merit. In this field as well as all law enforcement we spend the majority of our time with our co workers and we do bond and its hard to determine if its only innocent fun playing around and joking or its something more. A lot of times these feelings are taken to the next step and as time goes on you realize that it was a mistake. That co worker that seem so sensitive to your problems and gave you the impression that they cared suddenly change, now things are tense no more flirting or playing around this is it. You have to now work around this person that have shattered your inner peace. I know some of you know where I'm coming from cause you been there.

Article: Teen lifers a burden for state's prisons

Whats the big deal about juveniles that committ adult crimes? Teens have no respect for life and it doesn't matter what innocent bystander is there that gets hurt also. I'm sure if a teen would kill or seriously hurt one of your love ones you wouldn't be so ready to treat them as kids. I have worked with juveniles and they just seem lost and continue to come back to jail until they reach adulthood. I'm sure the judge didn't sentence them with life without have cause to do so. A lot of the time they show no remorse for their crimes and are looking for the victim. They brag about their crimes like its cool.Maybe if they got the death penalty also they would understand how permanent death is.

Article: Rookie of the year

I also look forward to seeing Barry's book on line. I suggested the title Scars and Bars which Barry has used. I also wrote the foreword and helped him to edit his earlier versions of his text. I believe Scars and Bars will become "must reading" for new correctional officers all over the country. A bible so to speak. As for those of you who have been in the game for a while, it probably wouldn't hurt for you to read the book. It would be a great reminder for you to snap out of the complacency that we are all prone to have set in from time to time.
