| Description: | According to a 2006 Bureau of Justice Statistics study, 74% of state prisoners and 76% of jail inmates were dependent on or abusing drugs or alcohol. Thus correctional physicians must remain up-to-date on treatment advances to treat patients with drug addiction problems. This year's SCP conference will present information from correctional and addiction experts on modern approaches to treating addiction, including a host of new therapies, both behavioral and pharmacological, that can effectively treat many aspects of drug use and addiction. In addition, the far-reaching impact of addiction will be explored. With this in mind, the education committee has put together a compelling program with the following presentations: Pharmacology of drugs of abuse; Impact of methamphetamine use on the correctional system; Anti-epileptic drugs in the substance abuser; Decreasing HIV risk in substance abusers; Management of opiate abuse during pregnancy; Opiate replacement therapy. In addition, we will have an hour of correctional "quick topics" in which a panel of experienced physicians from a variety of settings will attempt to resolve challenging, real-life situations posed by the moderator. |
