|Description:||Concern about public safety and taxpayer expense is stimulating
renewed interest among policy makers in improving success rates for people released from prisons and jails. Good physical and mental health are important in helping releasees reintegrate into the community and
avoid recidivist behavior. Thus, the role of correctional health services in
the larger effort to reduce recidivism can be significant. In addition, strategies developed in collaboration with community partners are essential to provide continuity of care after reentry.
This year’s Updates in Correctional Health Care conference features a special focus on this theme, along with a solid core of topics germane to all aspects of work in this diverse field. Hosted by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care, the meeting is expected to attract nearly 1,000 correctional health professionals who seek the knowledge and insights of experts who will discuss current trends, research findings, innovative solutions and best practices.
Related to the conference theme is a special educational track being presented by Community Oriented Correctional Health Services, a nonprofit organization established to build partnerships between jails and community health care providers. Topics will include use of health information technology, legal issues and more.
On Saturday and Sunday, preconference seminars will address fundamental topics in correctional health care, including NCCHC’s standards for health services. On Monday and Tuesday, concurrent sessions will feature nearly 50 resentations in the areas of medical care, nursing, cost containment, legal issues, mental health care, juvenile services and much more.
