|Description:||Keynote Speaker - Matt Canuteson
A 2014 SAMHSA Voice Award winner - Matthew Canuteson is a Project Associate at Policy Research Associates in Delmar, NY. Using his personal experiences with overcoming criminal justice involvement, substance use and mental health issues - Matt has spent over 15 years consulting and advocating for improved system approaches for people with behavioral health disorders in criminal justice settings. His story includes his escape from a life of jails and institutions to being one of hope and educational/career achievement. Much of his work has been focused on working to ensure that all Americans - people with disabilities included, are able to achieve their true potential.
Matt is a much sought after speaker with a broad national reach and has provided his valuable insight on a number of topics including the importance of incorporating people with lived experience to support recovery in criminal justice settings and the role of positive thinking and using hope as a catalyst for change.
After dropping out of high school - he now holds a B.A. in Political Science from University at Albany, State University of New York, and a M.A. in Public Policy from Empire State College in New York.
Prior to joining the SOAR TA Center at Policy Research Associates, he was the Assistant Director of the Statewide Family and Consumer Network’s Technical Assistance Center where he coordinated the daily operations of this National center focused on supporting consumer, family and youth run organizations. Earlier as the Policy Specialist at the New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services (NYAPRS) Matt led numerous successful advocacy campaigns to advance or protect funding for community support services and important legislative initiatives.
