Day 14: Getting your Foot in the Door

July 28th, 2009

A couple of my friends are very interested in the field of criminal justice. Since I’m an intern at Corrections.com, they ask for my advice on how to get their foot in the door and what steps they should take to get to where they want to be. Since I’m not a criminal justice major, and before this internship I knew next to nothing about the field, I decided to investigate for myself so as to be able to provide them with an educated answer. Day 13: Interview with Martin Horn

July 27th, 2009

Today I did my first formal (over the phone) interview with Martin Horn who has just retired from the position of Commissioner for The New York City Department of Corrections. I was nervous at first because the only other people I had ever interviewed were for my school newspaper. To me, this was a lot more important. Read more…

Day 12: Use of Force

July 23rd, 2009

An interesting article popped up on Corrections.com that was about the policy of using force on an inmate. Up until this point I just assumed that the rule of thumb when an inmate gets out of hand is to do what you can to protect yourself, the rest of the staff and the other inmates and also to protect the inmate from his/herself. Day 11: Overcrowding

July 21st, 2009

In my recent research I have come across an issue within the prison system that seems to be fairly prominent. Overcrowding in prisons has lead to escape attempts, attacks on staff and other prisoners, spread of disease, as well as other chaotic events. Read more…

Day 9: Women in Corrections

July 16th, 2009

Today it’s not out of the ordinary to see a female correctional officer. However, only a decade or two ago it was pretty uncommon. In researching this topic I have come across several accounts of male correctional officers saying how they remember being shocked when they were assigned a new partner and it was a female. Day 8: Facts

July 14th, 2009

I decided to do some digging around for facts today to get some idea of how big corrections actually is. I tried to scope out a few different websites that would help me to really understand the size of the corrections community. I was looking for statistics that showed me how many people were incarcerated in the United States, how many were women and how many were men. Also, I wanted to know fun facts about where the oldest prison in the USA and the largest prison in the USA were located. Read more…

Day 7: What is Maximum Security?

Day 6: Escapes

July 7th, 2009

In researching prison escapes, I have come across a long list of detailed events where prisoners escaped both successfully and unsuccessfully from jail. On several occasions, prisoners escaped from facilities that were of the highest security of their time. Sort of like the Titanic was a ship that would never sink, these jails were places where inmates could supposedly never escape from. Wikipedia features a list of 42 instances where either a single prisoner or a group of prisoners escaped the jails they were housed in.

Day 5: Could I Do the Job?

July 6th, 2009

One of the tasks I was assigned for the day was to create an intriguing blurb for Caterina Tudor’s author page. I took a look at a few of the articles to get a better idea of what she writes about. This also helped me to determine what I could write in order to encourage readers to view her work. Her latest piece entitled “Behind the Mask” is very interesting and I found myself wanting to read to the end of this article. She incorporated real voices into her writing. Six people offered their thoughts and in return she promised anonymity so there is no way to figure out who these people are. Read more…
