I am 29 years old worked in corrections for 1.5 years in West Virginia and have a BS in Criminal Justice overall GPA was 3.02. I went to interview with the BOP Federal in West Virgina and had my interview cut short after I finished my background information. I told them everything. I have never done drugs or anything like that. Shoot I dont even drink. I have a woman and 3 kids at home the hole nine. I am good person and love my Country. But my half brother was a LT. with the BOP and hade sex with a inmate while I was almost done with college. He is 44 years old and is serving his time behind bars for what he did. Why do I have to serve time with him and take away a chance to give a better life for my family? The reason the BOP told me is my credit was bad, ya and so has manny other CO’s they have employed and will still employ. They give you a chance to fix your credit, get it up to date. |

With us the backround check goes back to our grandparents. And if there is anyone in our immediate family back to the grandparents that has/had a criminal record we are disqualified. I know it seems harsh but those are the rules. |

Work on getting your credit straightened around. Make some kind of payment on any debt. Even if it’s a dollar a month. As long as you are showing that you are attempting to make a payment is all they care about. And you might be better off to put in for another institution as well. You can always transfer after your first year. They are a very picky agency. |

Roy, I am sure it [rejection] feels pretty crappy, but there are thousands of better careers in law enforcement and corrections than the BOP. |

I have worked for the BOP since 06.. I tried to get a job with them right after i graduated college in 04.. I had to work at a regional jail for some time before the feds would hire me.. CDCJim you may be right about better careers but most of them do not pay as well as the BOP. in WV… |

I’ve been watching for openings at the Federal Prison in my area, but they have not posted anything for several years now. I put in an application about 2 years ago, and never heard anything back. The prison is located in a very rural area, and there are not alot of other jobs in the local area near it, so I imagine most of the town works there, and fills the openings with other locals & family. Plus, did I read it right that you have to go to their academy in Atlanta for awhile once you get hired? VACATION!!!! |

Update. I got an Email from the BOP saying im never able to work for them. Oh but they said I can apply for other Federal employment. I thought if you fix your credit problem you could try again. Guess not me. I’ve never done anything wrong. If they dont want to hire me because of my brother thats fine I guess, but dont stick it were the sun dont shine! |

Did they give you a reason why? Is it still because of your credit history? |
