| Description: | Under direct supervision, executes and implements substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation methods and procedures. TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES Although it is not possible to provide an exhaustive list of all types of duties, responsibilities and performance standards, the following are essential job functions: 1. Encourage, motivate and promote the client's treatment. Observe, monitor and record client progress and behaviors. 2. Plan and recommend social and skill development sessions. 3. Follow up on clients who return to the community to evaluate adjustment. 4. Prepare all monthly and required reports. 5. Participate in staff meetings and in the making of recommendations regarding evaluations and progress for specific clients. 6. Facilitate groups, individuals and family sessions with family educator. 7. Confer with supervisor regarding problem areas and recommends treatment measures and interventions. 8. Assist in on-the-job training for new staff at the counselor level. 9. May serve as counselor-in-charge on new intakes, transfers, vocational rehabilitation liaison, community resources referrals or readmissions. 10. Instruct and monitor client work crews on the unit or the facility. 11. Provide supervision and documentation for Counselor Intern staff members. 12. Complete in-service training to meet the requirements for continued personal and professional self-development. 13. Comply with Cornell Corrections work rules and policies as explained in the company employee handbook and respond positively to directives from managers and supervisors to ensure conformance to standards. 14. Adhere to Cornell Corrections attendance policy; work overtime as required, to ensure accounting department deadlines are met. 15. Comply with company safety rules; take appropriate corrective action to ensure work is performed in a safe manner and without injury to self or others. 16. Communicate effectively with all levels of staff in a manner that promotes a team spirit and a sense of cooperation. 17. Participate in quality improvement process activity meetings. EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, education or related field, or the equivalent in work/life experience. EXPERIENCE: Two years of progressively responsible experience in substance abuse treatment. Therapeutic community experience preferred. KNOWLEDGE: Familiar with substance abuse treatment principles, 12 step recovery principles, accepted recordkeeping practices in licensed programs and current supervision principles. SKILLS/ABILITIES: Must have a customer service oriented attitude; Able to interact with all levels of staff and clients; Able to plan, schedule and effectively communicate with the staff and clients; bilingual (English/Spanish) skills a plus. PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS: Frequent sitting, intermittent walking, standing, bending, lifting (25 lbs. max); gross and fine manual dexterity; must be able to visually observe the clients and staff; hear, understand, and interpret staff and client behavior; communicate verbally and in written form. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Residential treatment center; Office areas are well-illuminated and are relatively quiet. Outside temperatures may reach into the 100's in the summer, while winter temperatures may reach freezing. JOB REQUIREMENTS: 1. Personal vehicle available for company use. 2. Must be able to pass criminal and background investigation. 3. Valid driver's license for state in which facility is located. 4. Must be able to meet company automobile insurance standards. 5. Must be LCDC (preferred), LPC, LMSW, or LMFT. |
