| Description: | The Unit Recreation Specialist is responsible for the recreation programs of an inmate housing unit in a maximum security correctional facility. MAJOR DUTIES Provides year-round leisure-time activities for the inmate population Plans and administers and enhanced recreation program for the inmate population in a variety of athletic, recreational and hobby craft activities Procures necessary supplies and services Provides guidance and counseling to inmates regarding adjustment, behavior and social skills Assist with the accountability of the equipment and supplies to maintain a year round recreational program Overall department tool control, inventory and stocking in accordance with the prescribed procedures Overall operation of the inmate barber shop, including maintaining equipment, ordering of supplies and overall sanitation procedures in accordance with the health department guidelines Will attend weekly safety and facility inspections of the housing unit. Address inmate concerns pertaining to recreation activities Will supervise inmate workers assigned to the unit recreation department Communicate effectively with all levels of staff in a manner that promotes a team spirit and a sense of cooperation. EDUCATION: High School diploma or GED equivalent Prior experience in recreational setting such as coaching and/or athletics preferred Ability to analyze inmate population changes to provide an ongoing recreation program to meet these changes Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction; working knowledge of Cornell Companies policy and procedures helpful PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
