Fla. Rebuffs Youth Offender

A teen who murdered one of his teachers will not be moved from a state prison to a juvenile detention center partly because he showed no remorse for his crime, state officials said.
Department of Juvenile Justice workers interviewed Nathaniel Brazill and reviewed court documents before deciding not to take him from the state Department of Corrections, spokeswoman Catherine Arnold said recently.
Brazill, who turned 15 on September 22, is being held at Hillsborough Correctional Institution near Tampa for the murder of Lake Worth Middle School teacher Barry Grunow in May 2000.
Youthful offender facilities run by the adult Department of Corrections typically house teen-agers with more violent records and longer sentences. The inmates get academic and vocational training.
The juvenile justice agency concluded that Brazill didn't need the special psychological treatment offered at its centers, Arnold said.
'It was also noted that he had shown no remorse for his actions,'' Arnold said.
Brazill's lawyer, Bob Udell, disagreed with that assessment. 'The second he was told that his teacher died, he broke down and cried like a little baby,'' he said.
But Udell said he didn't think Brazill was very concerned about not being moved from Hillsborough.
'Under the circumstances, he's happy with the programs they are providing for him,'' he said.
