A Rhode Island man freed from prison six months ago after serving nearly 20 years for a murder he denied committing died recently from injuries he suffered in a fall. Kenneth Waters, 48, fractured his skull two weeks ago when he fell from a 15-foot wall while taking a shortcut near his brother's house to buy cigarettes. Waters' sister, Betty Ann Waters, a single mother and former high school dropout who put herself through law school so she could help free him, said she couldn't 'think of anything crueler' than the brief taste of freedom he received. 'Kenny had six months of freedom to this day. It's hard,' she said. 'But we look at it as six months of freedom is better than 20 years in jail.' The family had remained at his side at Rhode Island Hospital since Sept. 6, when he was found bleeding and unconscious after his fall. Waters was convicted of first-degree murder and armed robbery and sentenced to life in prison in 1983 in the slaying of Katharina Brow of Ayer, Mass. Waters had been working at a diner near her home at the time of her death. Betty Ann Waters worked on the case for years and eventually learned that a box of evidence with her brother's name on it was sitting in a courthouse basement. The box contained the knife used in the slaying and pieces of cloth with blood samples on them. Waters was released in March after DNA tests of the evidence cast doubt on his conviction. Prosecutors later decided not to pursue a new trial. |
