A South Florida inmate's death is attracting attention after three other inmates say they saw officers beat the man before he died. An investigation is under way at the Broward Detention Center, and the inmates have been interviewed about the circumstances surrounding 41-year-old John Beraglia's death. The Broward Sheriff's Office says that Beraglia was on a suicide watch at the detention center's infirmary and he had been known to cause problems before. He had also suffered a brain injury as a teenager, according to the department. For now, BSO has classified Beraglia's death as accidental. They say that he banged his head against a wall before they could restrain him. That story is being questioned by some. '(The inmates) talk of brutality that we haven't heard about until they spoke to us,' attorney Michael Ryan said. 'And as (the officers) held (Beraglia), as these inmates say, face down on the ground, standing on him. If that didn't happen and something else did, all we want to know is the truth.' Ryan, hired by Beraglia's family, has asked BSO for a full explanation. Toxicology test results could take a number of weeks to be released. Ryan says that the family has no intention of suing the department. One of Beraglia's brothers is a longtime BSO deputy. |
