Girl, 9, Used To Smuggle Drugs To Inmate
By Associated Press
Published: 10/08/2001

Investigators said that a Massachusetts woman told them that she used her 9-year-old daughter to attempt to smuggle heroin to her husband in the Hampden County Jail in Springfield.
Danielle Velez is scheduled to stand trial in January on charges of drug possession and delivering drugs to a prisoner.
Velez told investigators that she put a heroin-filled balloon in the child's mouth after telling her it was medicine for her father and instructed her to kiss the man.
Jail officers caught the child passing the drugs and arrested the mother. The stepfather has also been charged.
