Egypt freed more than 2,000 prisoners on the anniversary of the attack that sparked the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, Interior Ministry officials said Sunday. Interior Minister Habib el-Adly signed the pardon order for 2,017 minor offenders who had served half of their sentences and displayed good conduct while in jail, the officials said. Such amnesties to mark religious or state celebrations are common in Mideast nations. Last year, Egypt released 2,000 prisoners. On Oct. 6, 1973, Egypt and Syria launched surprise attacks on the Jewish New Year, Yom Kippur, to try to regain territories lost during the 1967 Mideast war. Israel maintained control of the territories, but Egypt eventually regained the Sinai peninsula in its 1979 peace treaty with Israel. Israel still holds the strategic Golan Heights, which it seized from Syria during the 1967 war. |
