An inmate awaiting sentencing on kidnapping and assault convictions overpowered a jail officer and escaped with his wife in a U-Haul truck full of their belongings. Darrell Demetric Lester, 31, and his wife Angela, 21, were still missing Wednesday. Madison County Sheriff Clayton Lowe said there was nothing left in the couple's home. They probably left the area but shouldn't be hard to find. 'It's kind of hard to hide a U-Haul,'' he said. Angela Lester allegedly drove to the jail Tuesday and said she was there to pick up her husband's belongings. When the jailer opened the door to Darrell Lester's cell to get a bag belonging to him, Lester apparently hit him on the head with an unknown weapon. The jailer was treated and released. Darrell Lester likely faced a life sentence with no possibility of parole. He had a prior conviction for kidnapping and assault with intent to rape in 1988. |
