A riot at a medium-security private prison left eight inmates and two employees injured, authorities said.
A fight among 135 inmates began about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Victor Valley Medium Community Correctional Facility, said Russ Heimerich, spokesman for the California Department of Corrections. The cause was under investigation.
Two female sergeants were injured, authorities said. One was hit in the head with a microwave oven. She required 14 stitches. The other was struck in the face. She was treated at the scene.
One inmate was hospitalized for possible broken ribs, bruises and swelling of his head, Heimerich said. Seven others had minor injuries.
Pepper spray was used to subdue several inmates, and the prisoners were sent back to their cells.
''This kind of thing happens a lot in our institutions,'' Heimerich said. ''Riots ... are not all that uncommon.''
The prison, which houses mostly nonviolent offenders and parole violators, is 90 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
