An Oklahoma man convicted of kidnapping a banker's son and killing him although he got a ransom was executed on Thursday, prison officials said.
Alvie James Hale, 53, was pronounced dead at 9:24 p.m. CDT (10:24 p.m. EDT) after receiving a lethal drug injection at a state prison, Oklahoma Department of Corrections spokesman Jerry Massie said.
'I want to say goodbye to my family and friends. I want to thank them for being here,'' Hale said in his final statement, delivered from the death chamber gurney.
It was Oklahoma's 16th execution this year and the 46th since the state reinstated the death penalty in 1977 and resumed executions in 1990.
Hale was convicted of killing William Perry, 24, the son of a Tecumseh banker and a cashier at his father's bank
Perry was kidnapped from his home in October 1983, and his body was found several days later after his parents paid a $350,000 ransom. Perry was shot five times.
Hale said others were involved in the kidnapping and he was not the gunman. But prosecutors said Hale's father's gun was used to inflict at least two gunshot wounds to Perry's head.
Prison officials said Hale's last meal consisted of a bacon double cheeseburger, onion rings, French fries, a milkshake and a hot fudge sundae.
