Jail inmates set several mattresses and clothes on fire, sending one inmate to the hospital and at least three others into confinement, McLennan County Detention Center authorities said recently. Last week's fires may have been set to protest the food, said Rod Ellis, director of CiviGenics, the private corporation that runs the McLennan County Detention Center. At least three inmates who were suspected of setting the fires were confined to their cells, McLennan County Sheriff Larry Lynch said. One inmate was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, and another was taken to a hospital after suffering complications from asthma, assistant fire chief John Johnston said. The jail houses prisoners and detainees for several agencies, including the Immigration and Naturalization Service and the U.S. Marshal's Service. It houses 232 inmates, but just 29 were in their cells where the fires started, Ellis said. |
