Homemade blades made from jail cell light fixtures were discovered last week in an area at the Bexar County Jail where members of the Mexican mafia are housed, deputies said. 'Things we take for granted could very well be used as a weapon,' Bexar County, Tex., Sheriff's Capt. Ronnie Sanchez said. Deputies said inmates tore off the reflective metal of jail cell light fixtures to create a crude weapon. Sources told KSAT 12 News that officers stumbled upon a plot to possibly kill an inmate. Sanchez said about 90 percent of the shanks that were found were complete. Deputies also found more than 100 razor blades in a cell mostly occupied by the Mexican mafia prison gang. 'This is something that we do every day as part of our routines. We don't stop, and we know that the inmates have an opportunity to make weapons,' Sanchez said. Officers said they haven't found this many homemade weapons for some time. They said it shows that random searches work. Deputies said that if those who are involved with making the weapons face in-house discipline and formal charges. They said the weapons would be used to train cadets to show them what to expect once they work inside the jail. |
