Oregon Inmate Tricks Officers, Escapes

An inmate held on charges of theft and failing to register as a sex offender escaped from Yamhill County Jail in McMinnville by tricking wardens into thinking he was somebody else scheduled for release.
Joshua Burgoyne, 19, became the first person to escape from the jail in at least 14 years.
He did so by pretending to be his cellmate, Joshua Akins.
'We screwed up and didn't scrutinize the photos as closely as we should have,' said Jail Commander Curt Gilbert.
Burgoyne and Akins were arrested together last week after police pulled them over for driving an allegedly stolen car.
Burgoyne was also wanted on warrants out of Josephine County, including one for failure to register as a sex offender.
He was ordered held, while Akins, who had no warrants pending, was scheduled for release after the arraignment that day.
But the two switched places on their cots in the cell and also swapped IDs, said Gilbert.
'When the booking officer came to release Akins, this Burgoyne jumped up and accompanied the booking officer to booking and was subsequently released,' he said.
Not long afterward, Akins came forward and wanted to know when he was going to get out, as the judge had ordered his release. The mix-up was soon discovered, and that triggered a search for Burgoyne that has so far proved fruitless.
Akins is now being held on suspicion of assisting escape, identify theft and forgery. Gilbert said he did not know what motivated Akins to help in the escape.
