Anthrax has been found at the Bureau of Prisons headquarters in Washington, but the contamination is scant and employees should report to work as scheduled, the U.S. Justice Department said on Monday. Six sites at the Bureau of Prisons building at 320 First Street were tested, and two sites, both in the mailroom, came up positive, the department said in a news release. 'The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has characterized the positive test results as 'scant contamination' with a minimal risk of inhalation anthrax disease,'' the statement said. Results of testing at a nearby Bureau of Prisons building were not yet available. The Justice Department said it was consulting with the CDC on appropriate medical recommendations for Bureau of Prisons personnel and asked employees to report for work as scheduled on Tuesday. Four people have died and 13 others have been infected with anthrax, a livestock disease that can be used as a germ warfare agent, since the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington by hijacked commercial airliners. More than 32,000 Americans were forced to take antibiotics after anthrax-laced letters were sent to media outlets and to the Capitol Hill office of Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle. No new cases of anthrax have been discovered since Oct. 31 when a New York hospital worker died of the inhaled version of the disease. |
