A county jail inmate says taxpayers owe him $50,000 because of faulty footwear he contends he was issued at the jail. Inmate David Ries alleges a tattered slipper got caught in a metal grate while he was being escorted through the Waukesha County Jail, forcing him to fall and causing him to injure his foot. Ries has hired an attorney and filed a formal claim seeking up to $10,000 in medical expenses, $5,000 in lost wages and $35,000 for what he calls 'past and future pain and suffering.' The 24-year-old City of Pewaukee man has since been transferred to the Dodge Correctional Institution in Waupun to serve 30 months for violating his parole, after a 1996 conviction for felony forgery. Steve Schmitz, the county's principal assistant corporation counsel, said most such claims are rejected and the county usually never hears from the inmates again. Attorney Phillip Ramthun, who is representing Ries, said his client had twice requested new footwear at the jail, complaining that the cloth slippers he was issued were in shoddy condition. As he was being led through the jail July 6, the inmate tripped and fell when one of the slippers got snagged, according to his claim. Ramthun said the inmate suffered a broken toe and a laceration requiring stitches on his foot - injuries that the claim says 'may be permanent in nature.' Ramthun said the county failed its obligation to give his client appropriate attire in the jail. |
