Three shoppers foiled an attempted carjacking and detained the knife-wielding suspect, a New Jersey prison inmate who had walked away from a Camden halfway house this summer. Stephen Collier, 32, approached Louise Wogman of Williamstown when she arrived at the Echelon Mall in Voorhees recently, authorities said. Collier allegedly tried to force Wogman back into her car, but then took her purse and knocked her down. Two passers-by William and Lauren Leahy of Stratford tried to help Wogman, but Collier threatened them with the knife before trying to flee, authorities said. William Leahy and another man, retired police officer Victor Hidalgo of Sicklerville, chased after Collier and caught him a short time later with the help of Kathy Laphan, a mall security guard. Collier was charged with aggravated assault, robbery, carjacking and weapons offenses. He was returned to Riverfront State Prison in Camden, where he had been serving a term for drug distribution, and will also face charges for leaving the halfway house. Wogman was treated at an area hospital for a broken rib and other injuries. |
