Three federal inmates who escaped from a Cameron County (Texas) jail Feb. 27 used a piece of a mop's metal handle to chisel a hole in a bathroom ceiling and climb to freedom, county officials said. Maximo Manuel Ravell, Mario Alberto Hernandez Villarreal and Francisco Ramirez Guerrero remained at large Feb. 28 while the sheriff's department, U.S. Marshals office and Texas Rangers continued to investigate the escape from the Ruben M. Torres Sr. jail on Harrison Street. "We know how it happened. What we don't understand is why it happened," said County Judge Gilberto Hinojosa, who again pondered when the problems plaguing the jail system would end. "Just when we think something has been corrected, something else comes up," Hinojosa said. Six federal inmates have escaped from county jails this year. Sheriff Conrado Cantu was not available for comment, but Capt. Rumaldo Rodriguez said that the department's entire criminal investigations division and patrol officers continue the search for the inmates and are following numerous leads. The department would not provide descriptions or ages of the escapees, but officials did say that two of them are charged with illegal entry into the United States and one of them is charged with drug trafficking. |
