Three corrections officers at the Brevard County (Fla.) Detention Center have been placed on paid leave while officials investigate an inmate's suicide that happened while supervisors were at a cookout. William Gamez killed himself in March, the fifth inmate in four months to commit suicide at the jail. Sheriff Phil Williams last Tuesday said other officers also may be relieved of duties while the probe into Gamez's death proceeds. "I still believe Gamez died by his own hands, but I want to determine if our staff was doing everything it could have done to prevent it," William's said. Williams would not identify the officers, but Florida Today identified them as Sgt. Stephen Feaster, Sgt. Brian Seeley and Cpl. Frederick Abbey. A spokesman for the union representing some of the officers accused the sheriff of looking for scapegoats. "The sheriff's department knew this barbecue was taking place," said Pat McGuire, executive director of the Coastal Florida Police Benevolent Association. "And now they're on a fishing expedition to take some of the heat off themselves. The problem hasn't been with the corrections officers, it's been with the management of the jail." |
